On November 22nd, 1983 a demon murdered the mother of Sam and Dean Winchester. 22 years later, their father went missing while hunting for that same demonic entity. SUPERNATURAL is a horror-drama which started on the now-defunct WB station and now has migrated over to the nacent CW channel. It was created by Eric Kripke (who wrote the similarly-themed-but-much-less-well-executed film BOOGEYMAN), and has amongst it's producers David Nutter, who is alumni of such glorious series as THE X-FILES, and McG... who did the O.C. and CHARLIE'S ANGELS. Ugg. Regardless, it follows the weekly adventures of the Winchester brothers as they hunt down unholy baddies while searching for their dad. While it does focus on such creatures as Vampires, Werewolves, Ghosts, and the like, all of the creatures they hunt have a destinctly American flare, tying into the myth, folklore, and urban legends of North America.

The crux of the storyline is that after the witnessing the horrific death of his wife at the hands of an invisible supernatural force, John Winchester, an ex-marine (played by Jeffery Dean Morgan), began researching everything he could get his hands on about demons, spirits, monsters, and the occult in general in hopes of turning himself into a weapon against the supernatural forces that prey on humanity. When their mother died Sam was only an infant, and Dean was four years old. However, this didn't stop their father from giving them the training they would need to protect themselves and others from the things he was hunting. The end result is that Sam and Dean were raised to be living weapons against monsters of all kinds. It also meant a normal life was out of the question.

This didn't stop Sam from trying. Since he was only an infant when his mother died, it was less personal to him, so he was never as dedicated to the war against evil as his father and brother were. Now, 22 years later, Sam (played by Jared Padalecki) has left the family business in an attempt to live a normal life. However, when Dean (played by Jensen Ackles) shows up at his door to tell him that his father has gone missing, Sam agrees to help. Soon a personal tragedy destroys the new life that Sam was trying to leave and finally makes the fight against the unholy a personal affair. Sam and Dean begin travelling across country in Dean's Impala with an arsenal in the trunk, following a trail of the occult and the unholy in an attempt to find their missing father... and revenge on the forces that have destroyed the ones they love.
